Columbus has more than Buckeyes

Amy Hoover
The Lantern

lanterneditorialColumbus is alive with great athletic teams. We can boast the Columbus Crew, the Clippers and the Blue Jackets - as well as countless other minor teams and intramurals in the area. But these guys are usually overlooked most of the year thanks to Buckeye athletics.

I have been to Buckeye games at The 'Shoe, and in all honesty, they were a blast. Sure, there were crowds, a cacophony of sound and overwhelming activity, but the contagious team spirit made those games memorable.

However, I will choose a Crew game on a Saturday afternoon over a Buckeye game any day. It isn't that I am a traitor - I bleed scarlet and gray - but our local teams can boast just as much athletic talent and ferocity during their games.

Last Saturday, Crew Stadium celebrated its 10-year anniversary. The Clippers have a new stadium, and a victory under their belts from Friday (and dime-a-dog nights), with a great season ahead of them. All winter the Blue Jackets played phenomenal games with just as much violent intensity as most other professional hockey teams.

The fans of these teams, inexhaustible and devoted, contribute much to the city's pride. The Hudson Street Hooligans - the Crew's local fan base - sit in a specific section every game with banners, flags, smoke bombs and black and gold streamers. Fans bring drums and trumpets, chanting and singing at the top of their lungs. It sounds like a Buckeye game, but no one would get away with throwing several smoke bombs on the field or spilling beer all over their neighbors at The 'Shoe.

Intramurals and other minor teams are looking toward a great summer season as well. The Columbus Jackaroos, an Australian rules footy team that plays bi-weekly, has divided into three metro teams, leading up to their Spring Metro Final at the end of this month.

Buckeye fever is everywhere, from bumper-stickers to laptop cases, and other loyal fans donning Crew scarves or Blue Jackets coats show there's more than just OSU spirit; there's genuine city of Columbus spirit. I regret that I missed out on these events until my senior year. The games are fun and tickets are easy to come by, and most of all they prove that the fun and excitement of organized sports aren't restricted to the Buckeyes.
