Celebrate the 50th Anniversary of John Glenn’s Flight on Twitter
On Monday, February 20 follow @GlennSchool on Twitter for a special event commemorating the 50th anniversary of NASA’s historic Friendship 7 mission that made John Glenn the first American astronaut to orbit the Earth.
On February 20, 1962 at 9:47 a.m ET, American astronaut John Glenn lifted off from Cape Canaveral, Florida aboard a Mercury spacecraft that would orbit the earth three times before splashing down into the Atlantic Ocean four hours and 56 minutes later.
To celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Friendship 7 mission, the John Glenn School of Public Affairs at The Ohio State University in partnership with Columbus social media firm Mindset Digital will recreate the events of 50 years ago by live-tweeting the mission as it happened from the @GlennSchool Twitter account.
The Glenn School and Mindset Digital are reconstructing the mission from NASA’s audio transcript and will include photos, videos and Senator Glenn’s recollections to create a moment-by-moment account of his historic flight 50 years ago.
Twitter users can follow along by following @GlennSchool and join the conversation by using the #GlenninSpace hashtag between 9:30 a.m. and 3 p.m. ET on Monday, February 20, 2012.
