2010 Kiplinger Fellows in Public Affairs Journalism

Josh BrodskyJosh Brodesky is the real estate reporter for the Arizona Daily Star in his hometown of Tucson. Brodesky holds a master’s degree from the Missouri School of Journalism where he graduated in 2004. He has received numerous reporting awards, including the 2008 Sunshine Award from the Valley of the Sun chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists for investigative reporting into the state’s Child Protective Services. His reporting on the abuse, neglect and murder of children who were under the care of the agency led to changes in Arizona law. Brodesky has also worked as a news reporter for The Times-Tribune in Scranton, Pa. During his time as a Kiplinger fellow, Brodesky plans to produce a multimedia package on the after-effects of the housing crisis in Pinal County, a rural stretch of exurb between Phoenix and Tucson that has been rocked by foreclosures.

Heather FaisonHeather Faison is a multimedia journalist at The Philadelphia Tribune, where she works as a copy editor, entertainment writer, and graphic designer. She is also a contributing writer for Honey and Foundation magazines. Heather served as the editor-in-chief for the District Chronicles newspaper in Washington, D.C. and as a religion and health reporter for the Baltimore Examiner. She is the 2007 recipient of the NNPA/Ford Foundation Black Press Fellowship and a 2008 recipient of the Just Host CEO Platinum Award for Web Development. Heather also has been recognized with a Howard University/PBS Eyes on the Prize Image Award. She earned her bachelor’s degree in journalism from the John H. Johnson School of Communications at Howard University. During her time as a Kiplinger Fellow, Heather plans to examine health disparities in juvenile obesity for African American children in Philadelphia.

Scott GaulinScott Gaulin is a journalist for The Temple Daily Telegram in Temple, Texas, where he covers general assignments including college sports, features and breaking news. He has been recognized for his work by the Texas Associated Press Managing Editors awards in 2008 and has been included in MTI Magazine as one of the top photojournalists for 2008. His photographs have appeared in the L.A. Times, NY Times and USA Today as well as on MSNBC.com and Wired.com. Prior to becoming the chief photographer at the Telegram, Scott worked for the Waco Tribune Herald and as a freelance photographer for adventure travel and environmental clients. During his time as a Kiplinger Fellow, he plans to produce a multimedia project on post traumatic stress syndrome in soldiers returning from Iraq and Afghanistan.


Amelia KunhardtAmelia Kunhardt is a journalist at the Quincy Patriot Ledger in Quincy, MA. She covers daily assignments including local news, feature stories, sports and news projects. She also interviews, photographs and produces audio-slideshow portraits of women in the community for a weekly print and on-line feature titled, “HerStory.” Amelia earned her master’s degree in journalism at the University of Missouri and her bachelor’s degree in English at Bowdoin College. Previously she was a staff photographer at the Topeka Capital-Journal. She started her career as a reporter at papers in New Hampshire and Massachusetts. Her work has earned awards from Pictures of the Year, the Boston Press Photographers Association, the New England Associated Press and others. During her time as a Kiplinger Fellow, Amelia plans to produce a multimedia package on the survivors of drunken driving.

chandra thomasChandra R. Thomas is an award-winning journalist whose work has appeared in People, Essence, Ebony, Newsweek, Upscale, Heart & Soul, The American Prospect and Atlanta magazines, along with The Root and Time.com Websites. She was named Journalist of the Year for 2007 by Region III of the National Association of Black Journalists, and that same year was also named Print Journalist of the Year by the Atlanta Press Club. The Clark Atlanta University graduate and New Orleans native previously served as an associate producer for the Fox affiliate in Atlanta, a producer for the ABC television affiliate in Birmingham, Alabama and as a reporter for The Birmingham Post-Herald newspaper. During her time as a Kiplinger Fellow, Chandra plans to produce a multimedia project that will commemorate the fifth anniversary of Hurricane Katrina by chronicling how the disaster has affected the lives of children in New Orleans.
